Cornelian Cherry
Cornus mas
“Ukraine's national fruit tree. Older than Rome. Sour, tart, and completely overlooked.”
Cornelian cherry is not a cherry — it's a dogwood that makes fruit. It has been cultivated in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus for thousands of years. The tart red olive-shaped drupes are used for juice, preserves, and wine across Ukraine, Georgia, and Turkey. It blooms in late winter before any other tree even thinks about leafing out — small yellow clusters on bare branches, a January surprise. The wood is so dense it sinks in water; used for tool handles and ancient weaponry. Zone 4–8 means it works in the Hill Country and northern Texas. If you want a fruit tree nobody has ever heard of, this is it.
