Grandidier's Baobab

Grandidier's Baobab

Adansonia grandidieri

The most photographed tree in Africa. Cylindrical trunk, ten feet across. Madagascar only.

The massive cylindrical trunks — up to 10 feet in diameter, perfectly straight, topped with a flat crown — create the landscape that defined Madagascar in every travel photograph ever taken. Deciduous in dry season. Can store thousands of gallons of water in the trunk. Zone 9b–11 in the US. Critically endangered in the wild. The correct response to 'why would you plant something so hard to find' is 'because I can.'
